Class Information

Frontline Writers is a writing workshop where each participant not only creates but edits the works of classmates. Each cohort is guided by trained writing instructors. Frontline Writers is open to current and former police, fire, emergency medical services professionals, public safety workers, and their immediate family. Through the generosity of donors, the program is provided at no cost to participants.

The class is taught by leading writing professionals. This class brings first responders from across Virginia together to learn to write. This class is informal and relaxed. No stress about how well you write, or what you choose to write about. In past classes, participants have written about that call they never forget or ones that made them laugh or their first car.

  • Learn writing techniques and easy strategies for writing a story in a compelling, memorable way.
  • Work with first responders from all across Virginia.
  • Participants will complete the course having written, workshopped and edited at least one story—maybe more!
  • All experience levels welcome.
  • Offered at no cost to participants; first come, first served. Please be sure you’re ready and able to attend the full session.
  • All participants are expected to write original works on subjects of their own choosing. Subjects may be of any genre and expression, such as memoir, essay, fiction, poetry, even stage or screenplay formats.
  • Participants will also give feedback on the writing of members of the cohort. Constructive criticism is a key component of the classroom experience.
  • Frontline Writers will create a waiting list once 16 class spots are filled.
